Book Reports

You can discuss reading a relevant book with your supervisor and writing up a synopsis of that book including something learned related to your work as a CASA volunteer.


TV Shows

You can watch a variety of TV programs such as A&E’s Hoarders; MTV’s 16 and Pregnant or Teen Moms. If you know of other programs, be sure to talk to your supervisor so we can list them here for others to learn from as well.



There are a variety of movies that often include themes relevant to your work as a CASA. If you know of some that should be listed here, please let us know.
  • Homeless to Harvard is a drama based on the true-life story of Liz Murray.
  • Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire tells the story of a second chance for an abused girl.
  • An American Crime chronicles Gertrude Baniszewski’s imprisonment of a child in the basement.
  • Sleepers is based on a controversial book depicting the abuse suffered in a reformatory by four young people from Hell’s Kitchen who grow up to take revenge on their primary abuser.
  • The Savages explores the familial ties between adult siblings and their abusive father who now requires care.
  • Buck is a documentary based on Buck Brannaman’s journey through his abusive childhood to become “a horse whisperer.”

There are many other alternatives amongst those mentioned. Additionally, you can attend webinars and conferences to sharpen your skills including and meet your 12 hour training requirement. We will attempt to keep you apprised of opportunities available and would appreciate your feedback and letting us know when you come across something useful to you in your work as a CASA.
